OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR P/T

$15.00 per hour

JOB DESCRIPTION:

KIND OF WORK PERFORMED: Under general direction of the Assistant Manager-Fixed Route, effectively supervises fixed route and community shuttle bus operators engaged in daily bus operations. Performs work in the field monitoring transit equipment and operations.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (not intended to be all inclusive)

  • Supervises daily bus operations and Operators in their performance, safe driving techniques, schedule adherence, and passenger relations.

  • Maintains knowledge of all routes, detour routes and adjusting schedules as needed.

  • Monitors bus and shuttle system operations at scheduled time points. Check timeliness of stops, operator driving habits and passenger loads. Prepares written reports of system operation.

  • Responds to and investigates accidents and assists operators in filling out accident reports. Interviews passengers or witnesses and obtains police reports. Conducts follow-up in resolving customer complaints.

  • Responds to and assists operators with emergencies including but not limited to unruly passengers, sick or injured passengers, etc.

  • Processes passenger complaints and takes corrective action within limits of delegated authority.

  • Reports rule violations and recommends disciplinary actions.

  • Operates any JTA car/bus/shuttle/trolley in emergency situations.

  • Coordinates with Dispatchers on operations related situations.

  • Responds to vehicle breakdowns or other mechanical problems and attempts to correct minor breakdown problems before calling a mechanic.

  • Removes operators from duty for just cause as provided by the union contract or operator’s handbook.

  • Performs random checks of operator compliance in properly completing vehicle inspection books, compliance with safety rules, driving habits and on-time performance.

  • Monitors areas of construction that may pose as safety hazards to vehicles or passengers.

  • Performs specific operator checks as requested by Lead Operations Supervisor.

  • Assists or participates in various public and customer relations activities as assigned.

  • Administers Breath Alcohol Test to drivers as required under FTA regulations.

  • Communicates with co-workers, management, and others in a courteous and professional manner.

  • Conforms with and abides by all regulations, policies, work procedures, and instructions.

  • Conforms with all safety rules and wearing/using all appropriate safety equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must have thorough knowledge of Duval county street/road systems and familiarity with the effects of adverse weather on street/road conditions.

  • Must have excellent work record including attendance and job performance.

  • Must be able to identify, evaluate and resolve operational problems in the field.

  • Must be able to direct and motivate subordinate employees.

  • Knowledge of FTA or DOT drug regulations in both substance abuse and alcohol recognition for reasonable suspicion.

  • Ability to deal effectively with the public and to resolve customer complaints in a tactful manner.

  • Ability to supervise and evaluate the work of Bus Operators.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.

  • Ability to operate a bus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED and five years experience in the bus transportation industry, Operator experience preferred. Must have working knowledge of Dispatching and Radio operations. Previous management or supervisory experience preferred. Must possess or be able to obtain a valid state of Florida CDL Class “B” with Passenger endorsement license.
